MY OWN PERSONAL DRESS JOURNEY

The thinking behind and evolution of my gown.

THE THINKING

According to Harper's UK, there's been a massive web search increase for vintage bridal over the last couple of years. I believe this growing interest reflects both the obvious allure of singularity, as well as the allure of agency it provides the wearer in an overpriced and oversaturated bridal market that feels eager to take advantage.

It felt wrong for me on a cellular level to opt for a ‘new’ gown. Not only because I'm a vintage fanatic, but because weddings generally are so fraught with convention and unjustified expense, I was obsessive about finding ways around them. The act of hunting for a second hand dress, customising it and ultimately wearing it, imbued the sense of creativity I neurotically craved within the dictates of wedding planning.

THE STARTING POINT

I found my original 1940s wedding dress from an American seller on Etsy. I was working with my 'Good Bones' mantra, it was a bespoke gown made of reams of heavy champagne silk-satin. I was instantly drawn to the dramatic texture of it. I still remember my heart racing when it came up in my search. Vintage is a drug!

DECIDING TO ALTER

I loved the silk and the texture but wanted a more open, modern neckline.

 RENDERING & DESIGN

I had my very talented designer friend mock up a visual of a spaghetti strap conversion I could take to a seamstress.

ALTERATIONS

I did a callout on Instagram for local recommendations for trusted seamstresses and landed on one who specialised in vintage, costuming and evening wear. Exactly what you want.

FINAL RESULT

If you're hunting your own dream wedding look, the BRIDAL COLLECTION is now online.
